SEPTEMBER 17, 1923 Hiram King Williams, born on this day in Alabama, would find lasting fame as Hank Williams.

One of the most-significant songwriters of all time, even his beaten-up old Martin guitar is treated like the Holy Grail by current owner Neil Young, who got it from Bob Dylan and went on to write a song about it!

Hank, sadly, didn’t even live to see 30, but classics such as Your Cheatin’ Heart and Hey Good Lookin’ mean The Hillbilly Shakespeare’s fame continues to this day.

SEPTEMBER 18, 1970 Another music legend who died young, one of the world’s most gifted guitar revolutionaries was lost on this day at only 27.

Jimi Hendrix was so good that when The Beatles went to see him just after Sgt Pepper came out, he was already doing a stunning version of it.

No one else played a Fender Stratocaster quite like Jimi.

SEPTEMBER 20, 1946 Delayed during the Second World War, the first Cannes Film Festival finally took place in the resort on the French Riviera.

Part of the reason they set it up was to compete with the Venice version, which had been accused of bias towards the fascist world.

SEPTEMBER 21, 1955 The Royal Navy annexed Rockall to prevent Soviets spying on missile tests.

The small rock 240 miles west of Scotland has been argued over for many years and many reasons.

SEPTEMBER 22, 1991 The Dead Sea Scrolls were seen by the public for the first time.

Found in remote caves, they continue to fascinate.
