1953 FROZEN IN TIME

-

GIVEN the two clubs have been around for a combined total of 269 years, it’s surprising just how few times Arsenal and Doncaster Rovers have met.

Donny travel to the Emirates on Carabao Cup business on Wednesday night, only the ninth time the clubs have faced each other, with the Gunners losing just once.

Scots have played a large part in the London club’s history, and it was Andrew Swann from Dalbeattie who scored the winner when Woolwich Arsenal first met Doncaster for a Division Two clash at the Manor Ground, Plumstead in 1901.

When the pair met in the FA Cup for the only time, in 1953, another Scot, Jimmy Logie, was one of the scorers in Arsenal’s 4-0 win.

Edinburgh-born Logie won two English titles and one FA Cup, but earned just one Scotland cap, against Northern Ireland in 1952.
