Four people killed in horrific motorway crash

-

FOUR people have been killed in a horror M5 smash involving several cars and a lorry.

The lorry smashed through the central reservation – from the southbound carriageway near south Gloucestershire – and careered down an embankment at around 2.30pm yesterday.

Its nose ploughed into the ditch, leaving its trailer hanging over the busy motorway – leading to the closure of both carriageways. A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: “Four people are believed to have died and a number of others have been taken to hospitals in the Bristol area.”

Following the tragedy, motorists were stuck for hours in six-mile queues between Avonmouth and Almondsbury.

Cardiologist Dr Amer Hamed, who was among the first to arrive at the scene, said: “There was a lorry involved and at least two cars. One was destroyed and another had flipped over.”

Many passing motorists offered to help emergency services working at the scene.

“Several people offered us water and one man came out of his car to give food,” said Dr Hamed.

The motorway remained closed in both directions until late last night.
