Obviously, I know that Everest was conquered by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, who were Nepalese and a New Zealander respectively. But who was the first Briton? –L.

Hillary and Tenzing reached the summit in 1953, but it wasn’t until 1975 that a Brit stood on top of the world.

Dougal Haston and Doug Scott reached the summit via the previously unclimbed south west face, 33 days after establishing their base camp. Is Roy Hodgson, who recently became manager of Crystal Palace, the oldest manager in Premier League history? – M.

Not quite, although, at 70 years and 34 days, he was the oldest man to be appointed as a boss.

If he remains in post for one year and 160 days (and in football, there’s no guarantee!) he will overtake Sir Bobby Robson as oldest Premier League manager ever. I recently bought a DVD of Two Doors Down and would like to know where it is filmed. –K.

The hit BBC comedy stars Alex Norton and Arabella Weir as Eric and Beth as a Glaswegian couple who have to put up with their insufferable neighbours who keep popping into their house on Latimer Crescent.

Recorded mainly in the BBC’s Dumbarton studios, many external scenes are filmed in Bishopbriggs. I’ve always wondered how the delightful Yorkshire village of Giggleswick got its name. – P.

I believe the name means “Dwelling or farm of a man called Gikel or Gichel.”

Former pupils of Giggleswick School include the late Countdown host Richard Whiteley and actor Anthony Daniels, who played the humanoid robot C3-PO in the Star Wars movies.
