Underhill’s tackle paved way for an England win

-

Sam Underhill’s try-saving tackle on Scott Williams with the game delicately poised was praised by Mike Brown in the wake of England 12-6 win over Wales.

Brown said: “I thought the effort, to a man, especially front line, was unbelievable. Underhill in the corner really got us out of jail.

“That’s what (we want from) the guys off the bench, bringing the energy and really working hard and that’s what won us the game in the end, it was great work from him.

“We always want to go into every game going at teams, hit them first, take the momentum away from them and I thought we did that today.”

Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones commented: “We were slow out of the blocks, after that first 20 minutes we got a foothold in the game.

“We felt we should have got more out of the opportunities we had in the second half and we didn’t have the accuracy we had last week.

“It was a patchy performance. We’ve got a two-week break now so we’ve got to build on that.”

England coach Eddie Jones said: “It was a proper Test match, a real arm-wrestle. The good thing for us is we’re getting good at winning those sort of games.

“We weren’t at our best and Wales played very well. They are a tough team and full credit to Wales, but I’m so proud of our boys and what they did today.”

Wales counterpart Warren Gatland was irked by the decision not to allow what he thought was a legitimate Gareth Anscombe try.

Gatland said: “I still can’t understand why that’s not a try to Gareth Anscombe. I can’t understand why the TMO has not awarded that as a try.

“We’ve had a look at different angles and we can clearly see he’s got his hand on the ball, gets there first and it’s grounded.

“It’s a big moment in the game, particularly in this game in front of 82,000 to get the decision wrong, it would be nice to get some clarification.”
