A bumpy time for Carey in drama

-

IT was a case of history repeating itself for Carey Mulligan when she came to work on new BBC drama Collateral.

She’d previously had to tell writer David Hare she was pregnant while in a play of his on Broadway, and had to do it again for his first TV series.

But Carey, who plays DI Kip Glaspie in the crime drama, says he took it his stride.

“He was totally happy and said he didn’t see why Kip couldn’t be pregnant,” explains Carey.

“He barely changed a thing and only added two references to the pregnancy in the entire show.

“We put a bump in and as my real bump grew we just took away the fake bump.

“I love that because pregnant women don’t go around clutching their bellies all day, they are working women and they just get on with it.

“Other than the fact I was hungry all the time, the only moment being pregnant affected me was right towards the end when I was about seven months along.

“We were doing full night shoots where we would be sitting in a car from about 6pm until around 4am.

“It was being kicked by a baby for that amount of time, and you remember, ‘Oh yes – I’m pregnant’.”

The four-part series, also starring John Simm and Billie Piper, starts with a pizza delivery driver’s death but becomes something much bigger.

It was filmed in the aftermath of London terror attacks.

“It was definitely an odd time to be filming,” says Carey.

“When there is a lot of uncertainty you have to be careful.

?? ?? “We had to make sure people knew that we were filming a drama and didn’t get panicked that there are suddenly 10 squad cars pulling up outside.”
