Gable Endies cruise to keep on Blue Toon tail

Montrose cruised to a win over Edinburgh City to remain level with Peterhead at the top, with a game in hand.

Montrose made a flying start and took the lead in four minutes. Martin Rennie split the defence and Lewis Milne slotted past Calum Antell.

It was 2-0 in 18 minutes. Cammy Ballantyne was brought down by Pat Scullion as he burst into the box and Milne scored from the spot.

Milne was close to completing his hattrick when his netbound flick was blocked by a defender.

City had a flurry at the start of the second half and Jesus Garcia Tena had a free-kick saved, then Craig Thomson headed inches wide.

The Gable Endies put the icing on the cake with a third goal in stoppage-time, Rennie curling in a free-kick.

Peterhead 3 Clyde 0

League leaders Peterhead took the lead in the fourth minute. Jack Leitch’s 12-yard shot was blocked near the post, but fell to Russell Mclean, who pounced to fire home his 13th goal of the season from point-blank range.

On 18 minutes, a Kieran Duffie cross wasn’t cleared by Jamie Stevenson and the Blue Toon defence were lucky when a shot from Barry Cuddihy was deflected into the arms of Fleming.

In the 68th minute, it was 2-0. Clyde left-back Jordan Stewart bowled over Stevenson with his shoulder and Mclean netted his second goal with an immaculate­ly-taken penalty-kick.

The icing on the cake was a third counter for the Blue Toon in the 79th minute, a shot 12 yards out by substitute Rory Mcallister taking a deflection off Mark Lamont on its way in.

On seven minutes, Elgin’s Nathan Flanagan, a recent emergency loan signing from St Mirren, marked his debut with a nice finish over Craig Wight.

Ten minutes later, it was 2-0 when Brian Cameron stroked in a rebound.

Soon after, it was 3-0 as Shane Sutherland hit the ball home.

No goals in the second half, but Elgin’s Darryl Mchardy hit the bar late on.

Cowden threatened early on but it was the visitors who took the lead in 37 minutes when Mark Mcguigan headed home.

Soon after, Cowdenbeat­h were level as Jordyn Sheerin ran into the box to fire a low shot wide of keeper Chris Smith.

It was goalless in the second period, but Stenny came close in the final minute when Mcguigan headed inches over.

Berwick’s Declan O’kane shot past in the second minute, then Jack Hamilton’s shot early on was stopped by Alex Mitchell.

On the half-hour, Annan’s Ayrton Sonkur headed over from a corner, then Aiden Smith saw his 15-yarder stopped on the line.

Annan’s Scott Roberts had a shot blocked on the line on the hour mark

Berwick’s danger man Steven Thomson had several chances but Mitchell brought off good saves.
