A spot of feelgood DIY ... and a good cry

DIY SOS: THE BIG BUILD (BBC 1)

▼ There are two things guaranteed to make me weepy right now – jean shopping and DIY SOS.

This touching home makeover show has been going strong for 18 years.

And the Beeb is repeating past series as Nick Knowles and his team of big-hearted builders continue transforming homes and lives across the UK.

In another emotional rollercoaster, we meet Scott Jones, 17, who is confined to a wheelchair after suffering a series of strokes aged 11.

While the teen can’t get around his house or garden and has to shower at the gym, he is hell-bent on rowing his way to Paralympic gold.

A redesigned home will give him some independence and it’s amazing what the chaos of 100 volunteers doing five month’s work in nine days can achieve.

The show’s more heart-wrenching moments are nicely balanced by Nick and his team’s wry humour.

And even the hardest of hearts won’t be able to hide a trembling lip when the new, life-changing home is unveiled to an overwhelmed Scott.

If a burly bricklayer is shedding a tear at the end, I don’t feel quite so bad about sobbing on the sofa.

For a makeover show, DIY SOS does actually remind you of the power of community spirit ... and plaster-boarding.

Feelgood telly at its finest.

▼ THE QUEEN’S GREEN PLANET (STV)

Watching the Queen and TV legend David Attenborough (a match made in heaven) take a stroll around Buckingham Palace gardens chatting about trees – and her ambitious legacy project to create a global network of protected forests across the Commonwealth – is an oddly calming and charming experience.
