£66.8m for a goalie is bonkers but a price Pool had to pay

-

What price a top goalkeeper?

If you ask Liverpool, they’ll say £66.8m!

But if you ask me, I’ll tell you the price the Anfield club have paid for Brazilian stopper, Alisson, is ridiculous.

Now, I’m not surprised Jurgen Klopp has moved to replace Loris Karius after his disastrous showing in the Champions League Final.

Yet when you consider the Reds paid just £8m for Andy Robertson, almost £ 70m for a goalie looks absolutely bonkers.

A top- quality stopper can be the difference between winning and losing matches. There’s no denying that.

But I can’t help but think the pain of losing that Champions League Final they way they did is behind this move.

Karius’ blunders that night – whether just gaffes or down to concussion – didn’t just cost Liverpool another European glory night, they cost them a lot of money.

Had they won in Kiev, it would have earned them attention, status and cash from around the world of football.

But I’m not convinced throwing good money after bad is the answer.

To be fair to Alisson, he has looked like a top keeper every time I’ve watched him.

With that price tag on his head, he will need to keep doing the business.

If he doesn’t, his neck might not be the only one on the line.
