The Great Big Opening Party

George Square, Glasgow, Wednesday. Tickets cost £15/£7.50 plus booking fee

AUGUST marks the start of the Glasgow 2018 European Championships.

Europe’s best sporting athletes will descend on Glasgow to compete in 84 events, including aquatics, cycling, golf, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon, from August 2-12.

The sporting action will see a number of free events including the open water swimming at Loch Lomond, as well as many ticketed events (see glasgow2018.com)

Running alongside the sporting spectacular is Festival 2018, a programme of cultural events with something for everyone to enjoy.

Kicking things off in style is The Great Big Opening Party on Wednesday.

This ticketed event will take over George Square to launch Glasgow 2018 and Festival 2018, with performances from some of the most exciting names in Scottish music.

Fresh from her King Tut’s stage headline set at TRNSMT, modernist pop and R&b-tinged star Nina Nesbitt will take to the stage to dazzle crowds.

Also joining the line-up are Scots-egyptian multi-instrumentalists The Ayoub Sisters, who topped the classical charts with their debut album after rising to prominence with their cover of Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk.

SAY Award-winners Sacred Paws, who are signed to Mogwai-owned record label Rock Action, also take to the stage along with Mercury Music Prize-nominated C. Duncan who recently switched from classical music to pop.

The Elephant Sessions, famed for electrifying shows, complete the varied line-up.

With big names taking to the stage, there’s something for all the family.

It’s your chance to experience history in the making with the first ever opening event for the inaugural European Championships. Tickets are available to buy now via Ticketmaster.

The Great Big Opening Party is just the tip of the iceberg at Festival 2018 – so here’s a round-up of some of the best picks from this programme of events.
