We hope Luke’s family will get the answers they need

-

All of us hope that if we, or any of our family, face a crisis in our lives, there is support and help at hand.

That help may be in the form of your family but, in more severe cases, you will rely on the expertise and care of those in the medical profession.

In the vast majority of cases, that assistance is among the best in the world, guiding us back to health.

However, in the case of Luke Henderson, his family claim that support was missing and it ultimately cost him his life.

They say they were turned away by the NHS time and time again despite Luke showing signs of mental illness.

The evidence put forward by his partner is deeply troubling. Equally troubling and confusing is that the NHS report into Luke’s death said staff had acted appropriately.

If that is the case then why were there medical notes that confirmed Luke was, apparently, a risk to himself?

Why was it that he was considered a high-risk patient then two hours later deemed not to be showing signs of psychosis?

Luke’s partner Karen is rightly confused and angry about the lack of clarity so far provided by the initial investigation into this tragedy.

Therefore, we are glad that Karen, with the support of her MSP Monica Lennon, has been afforded a new investigation to look again at the circumstances involved.

It is critical that families caught up in such awful tragedies are given all the answers they need.

It’s hard enough losing a loved one to suicide without knowing if any more could have been done to save their life.

The answers also allow people to retain confidence in our health service, which, while not infallible, ordinarily provides excellent care for people up and down the country.
