Blades fight back to move into contention

- By Mike Rimmer sport@sundaypost.com

David Mcgoldrick struck two minutes from time as high-flying Sheffield United came from behind to beat struggling Millwall 3-2 at The Den.

Quick-fire goals from Jake Cooper and Lee Gregory after the break gave Millwall hope of a second league win of the season, after Billy Sharp had opened the scoring for the visitors.

But Mcgoldrick struck twice, the first coming from the penalty spot 10 minutes from time, before tapping home from close range as the Blades picked up their sixth Championship win of the season, despite Sharp missing a penalty.

Bolton ended a run of five Championship games without a win as they denied Derby County the chance to move up to fourth in the Championship with a 1-0 victory at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Derby came into this game with just one defeat in their last eight games in all competitions, but they struggled to create many clear opportunities, despite dominating possession.

A 10th- minute goal from Craig Noone proved the winner for Bolton as he headed home a Will Buckley cross from a tight angle.

West Bromwich Albion’s superb start to the season continued as striking partners Jay Rodriguez and Dwight Gayle punished Preston in a hard- fought 3- 2 victory at Deepdale.

Rodriguez and Gayle struck either side of a Ben Davies own goal to move West Brom to the top of the table and consign Preston to the foot of the table despite goals from Andrew Hughes and Alan Browne.

Lewis Grabban netted a brace as Nottingham Forest drew 2-2 with Blackburn Rovers.

In a breathless game, Forest forward Grabben missed an early penalty, before heading his side into a second- half lead. But Rovers fought back with two goals in a nine- minute spell – Adam Armstrong’s cross- cum- shot, and a Bradley Dack tap- in – which looked enough for a win that would have been deserved on the balance of play.

Grabban atoned for his earlier penalty miss though with a confident spot kick to secure a point.

Norwich maintained their rapid climb up the table when they beat Wigan 1- 0 at Carrow Road to make it four straight wins – and five in all competitions.

The Canaries have been making a habit of coming through tight matches with all three points and did it again as an 86th- minute penalty from substitute Mario Vrancic settled the game.

Lukas Jutkiewicz demonstrated the growing confidence in the Birmingham City side with two goals to pave the way to a 2-2 home against struggling Ipswich Town, who led through Jon Nolan and Matthew Pennington.
