No TARDIS but here’s a real Who and Cry

- BILL ON THE BOX

Being the drama going into the Bodyguard slot was always going to be a thankless task.

It’s a bit like stepping into the manager’s hot seat after Sir Alex Ferguson’s run of success. You just don’t want that level of expectation.

But the much-hyped The Cry had one big problem.

With Bodyguard there were loads of questions we desperately wanted the answer to. With The Cry, there was really just one – what the heck was going on?

Keeping viewers on the edge of their seats through teasing out the different storylines is perfectly valid.

Keeping us in the dark because we’re utterly baffled is something else entirely.

That was down to the fact that the producers kept things jumping between more different time periods than Doctor Who in a wonky TARDIS.

We saw former Time Lord’s companion Jenna Coleman in three alternative time zones, with different hairstyles, clothes and emotional states, all in a matter of moments.

She was meeting her partner, having a baby, losing a baby. She was struggling with the baby on a plane and having her day in court.

Add in the fact that it was dotted around a couple of continents, too, and it was, frankly, all too confusing.

And that’s a real shame. The basic tale about the missing child is every bit as gripping as anything Bodyguard could throw at it.

That’s why I’ll give it another shot to see if it becomes any clearer – or if my head hurts just as much afterwards.

Just like The Cry, this year’s wannabe business people were trying to be super smart.

And, just like every year, they were failing miserably. Thankfully.

Yes, we have another few months of blustering buffoons making fools of themselves. Excellent!
