Arnold Schwarzene­gger, the Austrian-born bodybuilde­r and film star best known for his role in the Terminator movies, was elected governor of California.

A staunch Republican, Schwarzene­gger made the official step from showbiz to politics when he told Tonight Show host Jay Leno that he was running for governor of the Golden State.

OCTOBER 8, 1971

John Lennon’s second solo album, Imagine, was released in the UK.

It topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

Kathryn D Sullivan became the first American woman to walk in space during the STS-41G mission – the first mission to include two women.

Sullivan and mission specialist David Leestma made a three-and-a-half-hour space walk, and operated a system designed to show a satellite could be refuelled in orbit. OCTOBER 11, 1981

Prince had a rough encounter as opening act for the Rolling Stones when the crowd began pelting him with food and bottles.
