MSP: We need tougher action to halt crooks
A leading MSP and former retailer called for action to curb Scotland’s army of shoplifters.
Daniel Johnson, Labour’s justice spokesman, said yesterday the crime impacts the economy and can leave shop staff traumatised. He has raised the issue with police after retailers complained about difficulties in getting a swift response.
He said: “The rise in shoplifting is a worrying example of the rise in crime across Scotland more generally.
“Acquisitive crime directed against retail businesses isn’t prioritised by the police and I think you get into a vicious circle where the perpetrators clock that. We need to think what the impacts are for retail workers and the wider consequences.”
Mr Johnson, the former managing director of the Paper Tiger stationary chain, said: “Violence against people working in shops is a significant, growing problem. It’s very stressful and can be traumatic for staff when they encounter a shoplifter.
“I think what will deter people is if these crimes are being taken seriously.”
More than 90% of retail staff in Scotland have experienced violence or verbal abuse and shoplifting is the most significant trigger after asking customers for proof of their age. Mr Johnson has put forward a bill to give additional protection to retail workers and those who have to enforce age restrictions.
