Prime time for impromptu kickabout with new PM

-

So what do you do before getting sworn in as the newly-elected prime minister of Luxembourg? Enjoy a kickabout without a young Scots tourist apparently.

Xavier Bettel enjoyed an impromptu game with schoolboy Angus Macfarlane.

Eight-year-old Angus was on holiday with his mum, Gail, and sister, Isla, 11, visiting family there when they bumped into the new PM.

Mum Gail, a civil engineer, said: “We were at a bar in a square opposite the palace when a guy started playing football with Angus.

“We wondered who it was as he was surrounded by officials.

“My brother, Lewis, told me it was the prime minister.

“He started playing football with Angus, just moments before he was about to be sworn-in.

“When he came out he was interviewed by the media and as he walked away he called over to his ‘Little Champion’.”

Gail says that she bought the ball only shortly before the PM passed by.

Her husband, Andrew, tweeted a thanks to Mr Bettel, who was in Brussels for the Brexit summit last week.

The leader caught up with the family the next day at the pavement café square and posed for pictures.

“He asked all about Scotland and told us to enjoy our holiday,” said Gail.

Angus said: “He told me I was a good player and to keep playing.”
