£1.8m for homes plan

Councillors have agreed to bail out a planned old folks housing development in Galashiels.

Eildon Housing wants to build 39 apartments on a former industrial site but discovered the land contained asbestos. Estimates suggest the clean-up costs could hit £1.8m. Borders Council has now agreed to meet the costs to ensure the extra care homes are built.
