Women allowed... after 257-year wait

-

Members of the fourth oldest golf club in the world have voted to allow women to join for the first time in its 257-year history.

Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society in Edinburgh, which was founded in 1761, opened its application process to women immediately following a vote on Friday night.

The club said almost 84% of its members had backed the change during a specially convened AGM on the issue, on a turnout of 67%.

Its decision to allow women to become full members brings it into line with a number of other historic Scottish clubs which have changed their rules over the past few years.

They include the Royal & Ancient in St Andrews, which voted to accept women in 2014, and Muirfield in East Lothian last year.
