Treasured island library reopened
A library which has been described as an ecclesiastical and Gaelic gem has been renovated after two years of work.
The refurbished Iona Abbey Library was officially opened yesterday by the Duke of Argyll.
Work was carried out on behalf of the Iona Cathedral Trust, which was established by the duke’s great grandfather in 1899.
Three hundred historic volumes have been repaired and a digital catalogue is being created.
Communities on Iona and Mull have been able to learn about the library during its closure through school tours.
The Very Rev Dr Finlay Macdonald, chairman of the trust, said: “We are grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund and all who have worked to restore this gem of a library.”
