Windass’ strike the difference to stun Baggies

- By David Scott sport@sundaypost.com

Josh Windass popped up with the only goal 16 minutes from time to give Wigan Athletic a thoroughly deserved 1-0 victory over high-flyers West Brom.

It was a losing return to the DW Stadium for Baggies assistant manager Graeme Jones, who was Roberto Martinez’s number two when Wigan lifted the FA Cup in 2013. But the visitors can have few complaints having been second best for much of a fiercelycompetitive encounter at the DW Stadium.

And any chance they had of getting back into it late on was ruined by the dismissal of Jake Livermore for a second bookable offence with six minutes remaining.

Gary Rowett lost to former club Birmingham City for the first time as the Blues secured a 1-0 win at Stoke.

The 28,160 fans at the bet365 Stadium – Stoke’s highest attendance in the second tier for 56 years – produced an excellent atmosphere, but it was the 3,000 in the away end who went home happiest after Che Adams’ late winner.

Preston substitute Louis Moult scored an injurytime equaliser as luckless Hull City were held 1-1 at the KCOM Stadium.

Jarrod Bowen’s late penalty had looked enough to earn the home side, who had begun the afternoon bottom of the table, three important points.

Bowen converted emphatically from the spot after 85 minutes when Chris Martin was adjudged to have been dragged down by Ben Davies. But Preston refused to give up and Moult stunned the hosts when he scrambled home Darnell Fisher’s cross.

Christian Doidge’s first goal for Bolton Wanderers earned a 1-1 draw at Rotherham in a game where the visitors were outplayed.

Wanderers were second best and looked like going down towill Vaulks’ second-half free-kick – but Doidge stepped up in the 85th minute to open his account against the club that tried to sign him last summer.

It was a point that Phil Parkinson’s men, who missed an earlier penalty through Josh Magennis, barely deserved as Rotherham dominated and had enough chances to have put the game to bed.

Dean Smith marked his first game as Aston Villa’s manager with three points as his new team chalked up a narrow 1- 0 home win over Swansea City through Tammy Abraham’s eighth-minute strike.

Reading collected only their second Championship home win of the season with a nervy 3- 1 victory over fellow strugglers Millwall.

Yakou Meite nodded Reading in front in the 28th minute but Millwall equalised just six minutes later through defender Murray Wallace.

Sam Baldock hammered home a penalty on the stroke of half time, with Reading securing the win through Meite’s late header.
