Keep the diamonds after dark

Accessories

Royal ladies have a much larger formal wardrobe than most and are often expected to wear a new outfit to each event.

This is made easier with neutral accessories – the Queen’s shoes and handbag rarely change from black despite the kaleidoscope of colour you will see in her dress.

Similarly, the Duchess of Cambridge often wears neutral court shoes and matching clutch.

If you have neutral accessories, shopping and dressing for formal events is much easier.

Sleeve length

Dresses available in the summer are often of the sleeveless variety.

Royal ladies usually have their upper arms covered at formal day events – if the dress is sleeveless, then a matching dress coat or jacket is often worn.

A more common look for the younger royals is to forgo the coat and wear a dress with sleeves – which are usually three-quarter length or long.

Jewellery

You can’t go wrong with pearls, a timeless addition – instantly giving a touch of chic to any outfit.

Discreet jewelled studs, or tear-drop earrings, are also very elegant.

Save the flashy diamonds for evening events.
