Babies: their wonderful world, bbc2

- TRACEY

Babies are just little miracles, aren’t they? But do you ever wonder what’s going on inside their heads?

They develop at such a rapid rate, learning new skills every day, whether it’s crawling, walking, climbing or mastering new words and phrases.

But just how much do these changes in the early years shape them for the future?

This series aimed to find out, with scientists setting out different tests.

They’re interesting – and great fun to watch!

In one, six-month-olds were presented with a jack-in-thebox, a toy dog that suddenly flips over and someone wearing a scary clown mask.

The reactions were varied – some laughed, some cried and others were nonplussed.

In another challenge, kids who use technology were pitted against others who don’t.

The techie kids seemed to have much better motor skills, drawing almost perfect straight lines in contrast to the non-techies’ wavy lines.

They were also able to stack blocks much higher than those who don’t play on tablets or smart phones.

It was a lovely, feel-good programme. Educational, too.

As a mum-of-two I’ve never analysed my kid’s reactions to things – but maybe it’s time to start!
