Barnes rescues Clarets with a belated penalty

-

Ashley Barnes’ last-gasp penalty – Burnley’s first in 68 top-flight matches – helped the Clarets snatch a 1-1 draw against Southampton as both teams maintained their unbeaten start to 2019 in the Premier League.

Nathan Redmond’s fantastic finish from distance just before the hour mark looked to have earned Saints a potentially-price less three points in their battle to maintain their top-flight status.

But Southampton defender Jack Stephens was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area in the third minute of time added- on and Barnes–who had a very strong spot- kick appeal turned down in the first half – made no mistake.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche took solace from their penalty drought ending, but felt they should have been awarded two spot-kicks.

In the first half, Barnes went down following a clumsy challenge from Saints keeper Alex McCarthy, only for referee Anthony Taylor to rule against the Clarets forward.

The penalty that was given was Burnley’s first in the top- flight since April 2017, although Dy chew as still left frustrated with the decision that did not go in his side’s favour.

He said: “I can’t believe what I’ve seen and it’s not given as a penalty. Now people might disagree with me, but that’s as clear a penalty as I’ve seen in a long, long time.”

Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster produced an inspired performance as Brighton’s winless run stretched to five league games with a 0-0 draw at the Amex Stadium.

Former England international Foster twice kept out headers from Jurgen Locadia and also saved from Shane Duffy and Florin Andone to earn his side a point.

Hornets boss Javi Gracia was quick to praise Foster, saying: “He has a brilliant career and now I think he is enjoying his time with us. I know he’s a very good keeper.”

Fulham’ s hopes of Premier League survival suffered a fresh setback when they lost 2- 0 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

An improved display against Tottenham and victory over Brighton had presented Claudio Ra ni er i’ s with some momentum, but they were outplayed by Palace and again contributed to their defeat, which was secured by goals from Luka Milivojevic and Jeffrey Schlupp.

“All the big teams are coming to Craven Cottage, and maybe we can take some points from the big teams,” said Ranieri.

Bobby Reid doubled his goals tally for Cardiff with a brace as the Bluebirds beat Bournemouth 2- 0 on an emotional day in south Wales.

The home supporters paid emotional tributes to Argentine striker Emiliano Sala in the club’s first home game since he disappeared.
