Restaurant REVIEW

FORGAN’S, 110 MARKET ST, ST ANDREWS

-

1 Location

Nestled on one of the small town’s three main shopping streets, at the end of a narrow lane – beautifully decorated with lights and fresh produce displays, the alleyway really sets the scene for what’s to come inside.

2 First impressions

Modern and sophisticated, the décor has a rustic aesthetic. Exposed wooden panels and iron beams line the walls, and pretty over-sized lights shine down on the simple furniture. There are larger booths set off to the side.

3 service

We felt welcome as soon as we walked in, but the staff still gave us space to chat while we enjoyed our food.

4 menu

As well as a good selection of starters, we could also choose from nibbles and sharers, including baked Camembert and local artisan bread. From comforting winter warmers to light salads there’s a good selection of main dishes. There is also a reasonably priced brunch menu at the weekend.

5 taste

We ordered the vegan crispy polenta and beef bourguignon topped with fluffy pastry and served with honey roast veg and mash. The salad was crisp and perfectly dressed, and the polenta cubes were a lovely addition – crunchy and not a bit oily, they brought texture and taste to an otherwise simple dish. The beef was a little salty but otherwise rich and delicious, and the portions were very generous.

6 price

With a coffee, a soft drink and two mains, the bill came to just over £30 – the beef bourguignon accounting for half. The portions and quality ensured it was good value for money.

7 ambience

Relaxed and casual, the perfect backdrop for a lazy afternoon of good company and great food.

8 something special

Locally sourced lobster is available to add to any of the grill items, including rump and ribeye steak.

9 toilets

Clean and well maintained.

10 verdict

Great for special occasions or a family lunch. 17/20
