I gave up smoking 30 years ago after my third try. It was a struggle, but it was worth it.

Hamilton Mclean, Harwood

I have tried on several occasions to stop my intake of cakes and chocolate but it has only ever lasted a couple of days. I’m lucky, I’m one of these people who hasn’t put on a great deal of weight, but I could do with losing a bit now I’m getting older.

Margaret Gibb, Fife

My husband was a heavy smoker and I could not sleep for him wheezing. He decided to make a New Year’s resolution to stop smoking 25 years ago, which he did. I’m so proud of him – and there’s no more wheezing!

Margaret Brown, Rutherglen

I had tried to give up smoking many times but one day in 1982 I decided to give up once again. It was difficult for the first three days. My wife and I gave up on the same day but for different reasons, and it’s the best thing we ever did.

Jean-claude Huntzinger, Lochgelly

I have struggled with my sweet tooth all my life, mostly without success. I’m now in my 80s and suddenly I’m no longer interested in eating sweet things. The answer is to live long enough for the craving to go.

Liz Kelly, Glasgow

I give up chocolate and alcohol for Lent from time to time but don’t crave either.

Elizabeth O’regan, Lincoln

I’ll never quit collecting cookery books, or wearing make-up and nail polish!

Judi Martin, Aberdeenshire

I enjoy a glass of wine, port or whisky. Not all at the same time and in moderation.

Ronald James, Angus

I couldn’t give up fishing – it’s what keeps me sane.

Bob Mitchell, Elderslie
