Non Stanford served a timely reminder to Olympic selectors by yesterday storming to her first World Triathlon Series victory in more than three years in Hamburg.

The 30-year-old former world champion held off the challenge of Cassandre Beaugrand of France to win in 59.24, seven seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Stanford is facing a struggle to earn selection for Tokyo in a competitive Great Britain women’s team, for whom Georgia Taylor-brown and Vicky Holland also finished in the top 10.

And she will step up her bid to return to the Games when she takes part in the potentially crucial triathlon test event in Tokyo next month.

Stanford said: “I really didn’t expect to do that – everything has been going really well but I’ve been quite a bit off the podium in the last couple of years. “To come away with a win is fantastic. Now I want to go to Tokyo and show the selectors that I’m a genuine contender for that team.”

Sparsely-tied flies are always a great alternative when the heavier dressing isn’t proving attractive. It’s worth trying this pattern called the Sparse Cormorant.

It is tied on a size-10 Kamasan B175, using black UTC 70 thread. The body is Pearl Mylar tinsel, ribbed with black micro wire and the thorax is red holographic tinsel.

The wing is black marabou and the cheeks are jungle cock.

■ The top-catching flies at Glendevon’s Frandy Fishery included the Black Hopper, Bibio Hopper, Hot Head Damsel, Yellow Owl and various Cormorants, whilst all areas continue to fish well.

The angling clubs were out in force with Grangemouth AC taking 19 fish for 40lb 4oz, RAF Northern League AC 21 took fish weighing 37lb 12oz, and Glasgow Academicals AC had seven for 13lb 14oz. ■ The fishing is extremely challenging right now at the Orchill Trout Fishery, near Braco, due to the abundance of natural fly life in the water.

However, Angus Inglis, from Callander, found the winning formula with dries and took three fish for 9lb 8oz.

Allan Stirling (Auchterarder) two fish for 6lb on a Sedge Hog, G Mcculloch (Livingston) had three fish for 9lb on Buzzers.
