Loungecore king of cool on song and on stage at 91

-

Proving that wrinkly rockers really might have decades left in them, songwriting legend Burt Bacharach is still performing live at 91 years old.

The man behind easy listening favourites such as I’ll Never Fall In Love Again, Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head and Walk On By is playing a sold-out show at the Kelvingrove Bandstand in Glasgow later this month.

Working with lyricist Hal David from 1957, the pair wrote hundreds of songs together.

Artists to have performed Bacharach songs include Tom Jones, Cilla Black, Gene Pitney, The Carpenters and Dusty Springfield.

He has won six Grammys, three Oscars, had 73 hits in the US Billboard 100 and 52 in the UK top 40, and will release new material later in the year.

Speaking five years ago, when he was a sprightly 86, to The Sunday Post about touring, he said: “It’s a way of meeting people. It’s direct contact and I try to give them as much music as I can play.

“I take it a day or a month at a time and I enjoy it. That’s the big factor – why just sit at home and write?”

In-fighting, band politics and court cases don’t stop the juggernaut that is Fleetwood Mac.

Formed in 1967 as a blues band, Mick Fleetwood and John Mcvie are the only original members of that early incarnation.

The band’s sound – and fortunes – changed with the addition of Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham in 1974, and massive album Rumours.

Despite ousting Buckingham before the commencement of their latest tour, the band continues to do huge live business, and Mick, John, Stevie and Christine Mcvie – now all in their 70s – show no signs of slowing down, with a series of arena dates in Australia, New Zealand, America and Canada scheduled for the rest of the year.
