Queen of the South recovered from the loss of an early goal to have Dumbarton finished off by the midway point of the first half.

PJ Crossan gave Sons the lead, but goals from Michael Paton, Gary Oliver, Stephen Dobbie and Connor Murray then put the visitors in an unassailable position, all within the first 23 minutes.

Dumbarton were looking to recover from Tuesday’s 6-1 hammering by Morton, but were punished for more slack defending which let them down badly.

After Dobbie shot wide for Queens when well placed, they were punished on eight minutes when Crossan met Ryan Tierney’s ball to the back post and scrambled it home.

The lead lasted only three minutes, with Paton this time finishing a cross at the back post to bring the visitors level.

After 13 minutes Queens were in front when a low ball was sent over from the right and Oliver, with virtually the entire penalty area to himself other than home keeper Connor Brennan, made no mistake from six yards.

Four minutes later Queens got away down the left, and Dobbie rolled home their third after cutting inside.

And on 23 minutes the lead grew further as Murray bent home a shot from the edge of the area.

Dumbarton were more competitive in the second half, but lacked the cutting edge to seriously trouble the Queens keeper.

Indeed, only a fine save by Brennan, turning Murray’s shot over the bar, prevented a fifth goal for the visitors.

New signing Joe Mckee went close for Sons towards the end, but his shot was saved.
