Motherwell will make fast work of league rivals

- By Ewing Grahame SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Speed kills – and Motherwell midfielder Liam Polworth is convinced that the Steel men’ s turbocharged velocity on the flanks will prove lethal to Premiership full- backs this season.

The Fir Park faithful got their first look at wingers Sherwin Seedorf and Jermaine Hylton in Friday’s 4-0 Betfred Cup demolition of Morton.

Polwor th played a vital part in his side’s first two goals but, like the fans, he left the field raving about their rapid raiders, and he’s already salivating at the prospect of watching the wide men take on Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen.

“It’s great for someone in my position to have people like them on the outside of me with that searing pace, and they have a lot of skill, too, which is a massive help,” said the former Inverness midfielder, who was making his debut.

“They seemed to be just walking past Morton’s players at some stages and they’re only going to get better. Once they get used to the rest of the lads and everyone gets fitter then you’ll see the best of them.

“It’s an exciting time for the club. Sherwin and Jermaine will thrill the fans and upset opponents.

“All they’re doing at times is just knocking the ball past their marker and then showing that they’re far too quick for them. Their speed will upset any team we come up against.”

Robinson used Polworth in the role David Turnbull made his own last season and the 24- year- old has no doubts that he’ll benefit from having Seedorf and Hylton on board.

“Central midfield is a key role and my main job is to provide the passes and the chances for the front three and, when they’re finishing like they were against Morton and going at the opposition the way they did, it makes my life a lot easier,” he claimed.

“James Scott is really good, isn’t he? This will be his first full season in the first team. He’s only 18 but it’s good that he’s getting goals at such a young age – and he could have had even more.

“When you have so many new players arriving during the summer it can be hard, but that was a fluent display. We already enjoy working with each other.

“Everyone has worked hard and so far it’s paid dividends. The gaffer spoke to me at the end of last season and it had always been my intention to make the step back up. I’ve been trying to do that for the last two years but things kept getting in the way.

“However, when I heard that Motherwell were interested, it was something I wanted to do – the gaffer really sold me on it.”
