‘Everything is in place’ for Ross County to do well

- By Sean Hamilton SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Callum Morris had to move down the leagues after starring for Dundee United and Aberdeen in the Premiership.

But the Ross County star always knew he would get back to the top flight.

Morris has spent two-and-a-half years in the Championship with Dunfermline and County since being allowed to leave Pittodrie.

Getting back to the Premiership has taken longer than he hoped.

But now he has made it, he is determined to prove he was always a top level defender.

“I’m really looking forward to playing Premiership football again,” he said.

“It’s one of the reasons I came to Ross County. I just had this gut feeling we’d win the league last season.

“On top of that, the facilities we’ve got are second to none.

“Everything is in place for us to be a Premiership team, and I think we’ve got a Premiership squad.

“We just need to bring it all together now and hit the ground running when the league starts.

“On a personal note, you always believe in yourself – and I’ve always believed I can play at that level.

“I know my career has been a bit of a rollercoaster from day one.

“But these are the opportunities you have to take. When they come along, you have to go and make sure you grab them with both hands.

“That’s what we’re all going to do to a man – all the players, all the staff, the whole football club – and, hopefully, have a good campaign.”

County will today face Premiership opposition for the first time this season in the form of Betfred Cup opponents St Johnstone.

With two thumping victories over Montrose and Brechin City under their belts, the Staggies are in a strong position to top Group B.

But Morris knows Saints will prove a tougher nut to crack than their previous opponents – despite the Perth side’s shock loss to the Gable Endies in midweek.

“My experiences at Mcdiarmid weren’t always good – especially with United,” he admitted.

“But today is still a massive opportunity for us to gauge where we are, particularly against a club we hope to be challenging.

“You’ve got to aim high.

“It’s not just me, there’s a wealth of Premiership experience in the squad, probably more than a lot of the teams that are in there already.”
