Asher-smith hopes to carry form into Worlds

- By Nick Mashiter SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Triple European champion Dina AsherSmith insists she is in perfect shape as she continues her countdown to the World Championships.

The 23-year-old races in the Diamond League in Birmingham today, just six weeks before the Worlds start in Doha.

The British Championships, also in Birmingham, next week double as the trials to make the squad for the trip to Qatar.

Asher-smith will run in the 200m at the Alexander Stadium today and is due to compete in both the 100m and 200m in Doha.

Having run sub11 seconds in every Diamond League 100m race this year she feels in top form.

She said: “I’m looking forward to running fast in October and I don’t think I’ve had a 100m record like this ever before so hopefully I’ll stay healthy and fast.

“I am very happy to have stayed under 11 seconds this year, I’m looking to continue that through the next races into the World Championships.

“I love running in the UK and I’m really happy I get to run in the UK late in the season and closer to the World Championships. It’s not quite a final goodbye for the Worlds but it’s as close as we can get.

“The field is packed and I’ve been fortunate to run on the Diamond League circuit this year with so many talented and incredible women. This race is no different.”

Katarina JohnsonThompson will face heptathlon Olympic, World and European champion Nafi Thiam in Birmingham in the long jump.

Johnson-thompson finished second in the heptathlon at last year’s European Championships behind Thiam, but will not read too much into any results from today.

She added: “It’s nice being alongside Thiam, she is one of the main competitors in the heptathlon.

“It’s nice to potentially size each other up but I’m not looking at it much either way. It’s about Doha in six weeks.”
