You’ve made Oor Wullie’s summer. Thanks a million

-

He’s Scotland’s most famous wee boy and now it’s fair to say he’s Scotland’s happiest.

After an incredible summer, Oor Wullie has been left delighted by the fun and generosity created by his Big Bucket Trail.

And why wouldn’t he be? Thousands upon thousands of people have trekked mile upon mile to visit the 200 statues that took pride of place up and down the country.

From Oor Rod to Oor Freddie, the wonderful creations put smiles on the faces of young and old.

More importantly though, the statues have helped three wonderful charities who treat sick kids across Scotland. So today we say thanks.

Thanks to the public who took Wullie to their hearts. For older generations that wasn’t difficult as they grew up with the wee scamp but wasn’t it great to see today’s children embrace Wullie as their own?

Thanks to those who worked so tirelessly behind the scenes to stage what became a national celebration of an iconic cartoon character.

Thanks to the artists who put their hearts and souls into producing such wonderfully varied designs. Who could have imagined Wullie as a Tunnock’s Teacake?

Thanks to those who dipped into their pockets to help raise an amazing £1.29 million: those of you who bought the merchandise, those who sponsored statues and finally those who forked out huge sums at the auctions.

But, finally, the biggest thanks of all goes to the doctors, nurses and other medical staff who will benefit from the huge sums raised.

They are the ones on the front line. It’s their expertise and compassion that makes the difference when a child needs treatment in the darkest of times.

So from everyone at The Sunday Post, thank you for just being braw.
