Maybe we just need someone to restore our faith in love

Iam a bit obsessed with showbiz marriages. One of my favourite couples is Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Ok, they’re not actually married, but they’ve been together for over three decades which is more than most can say.

Clearly still besotted with each other, they were recently papped cycling together, giggling like a couple of teenagers. Even their stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame sit side-by-side – the showbiz equivalent of wearing matching bathrobes.

When Brad and Angelina split up three years ago, I was perturbed. They said they were soul mates, they had six children together, he had supported her through a double mastectomy… how could they do this to me?

I hate it when seemingly solid marriages break down, so I’m happy to be featuring a story of true romance in this week’s P.S.

Gloria Estefan and her husband Emilio, who have been together for 43 years, have turned their love story into a successful Broadway musical. The pair met in 1975 and went on to form the Miami Sound Machine, which propelled Gloria to global pop stardom.

While fame often drives couples apart, for them, it forged an unbreakable bond. Gloria tells us: “We are very different but in the things that matter – morals, values, priorities – we are on the same page.”

It struck me as such a simple and hopeful message.

With 42% of marriages ending in divorce, maybe we just need a little something to help restore our faith in love.

Perhaps that’s why Gloria and Emilio’s stage show has been such a universal hit.
