- WORDS STEV IE GA L LACHER

What can we expect from this series of What’s On Scotland?

Our aim is to go around the country and have a look at what’s happening and where you can go as a family, with pals, as a couple or even yourself. It covers everything from theatre, music, events, cinema but also things you might not know about, like exhibitions, art galleries or stuff that’s going on for the kids. What’s your ideal night out?

It depends who I’m with. If it’s my husband then ideally it would be to go for a really nice meal somewhere followed by some nice cocktails, then we’d go to catch the latest movie. The Everyman Theatre in Glasgow and the new Odeon Luxe cinemas are fantastic – it’s all so comfortable. It’s a different story if I’m going out with my friends though. There would be a lot more drinks and dancing. How do you prepare for going on air?

I used to do all these vocal exercises in the dressing room before going on air – people thought I was mental. I don’t do it as much now but I try to avoid dairy – they say it affects your vocal cords. It’s difficult because I’m a tea jenny. Mostly I’m trying to get to grips with the script.

Has anything gone wrong for you live on air?

There have been a few autocue malfunctions. There’s nothing quite like that feeling of looking up and seeing what we call the Black Screen Of Death. That’s another good reason for really learning the script beforehand.

Who’s been your hardest interview?

One who I was nervous about was Craig Ferguson. He went away to the United States and presented the Tonight Show where his job was to interview all these famous celebrities. I was a little worried but he had a very dry sense of humour. It ended up being my favourite interview.

Any other notable interviews?

I interviewed Jack Vettriano – he asked if he could to take me for dinner in Nice. I think I’ll hold him to that, although my husband might have something to say. I don’t think I’d go for dinner with him in Edinburgh, but Nice? Yes.

Who’s your presenting idol?

It has to be Holly Willoughby. She’s got a real grace about her, but she’s a real people’s person, too. She doesn’t seem intrusive at all – more like your friend. One of my pals is brutally honest and saw me on television. They said: “You remind me of a Costcutter’s Holly Willoughby”. I took that as a massive compliment!
