Rural retreats and hidden gems nestling in beautiful countryside bring tranquillity and elegance Isle of Eriska

North of Oban (signed from A85 north of Benderloch). Hotel, spa and, as they do say, island! As you drive over the Victorian iron bridge, you enter a tranquil world. Its 300 acres are a sanctuary for wildlife. The famous badgers come to the door of the conservatory bar for milk and peanuts. In 2017, this baronial house, for decades in the capable hands of the Buchanan-smiths, was sold. Little doubt, one thought, that its reputation for food and fastidious service would prevail. Two two-bedroom and five one-bedroom suites in spa outbuilding have private terraces and hot tubs. Eight hilltop lodges and “reserves” are above all that; comfy and private. Nine-hole golf, great 17m pool and gym. In the spa, ishga and ESPA treatment rooms. Dining in formal rooms or in the Deck Restaurant. ● Isle of Eriska Hotel

Excellent and considerate service, top-notch food, impeccable interiors. Quality costs but the price includes just about everything. Tennis court and lovely walks in superb grounds.

Kinloch House

Knockinaam Lodge

A Victorian house nestled on a cove. Discreet service and excellent food. Winston Churchill was once very comfortable here! Superb wine and whisky list. 15km south of Stranraer, off A77 near Lochans but get directions.
