Edinburgh City closed the gap on title front-runners Cove Rangers with a narrow Ainslie Park victory over the North side, whose lead at the top of the table has now been reduced to two points.

The visitors began brightly when Ryan Strachan fired in a shot which was saved by Aidan Mcadams, but they fell behind in the ninth minute when a free-kick was met by Liam Henderson and his header flew past Cove keeper Stuart Mckenzie.

City made it 2-0 on the half-hour, Thomson’s corner from the right being again headed home by Henderson.

Rangers’ Martin Scott reduced the deficit soon after, sending a shot beyond Mcadams.

Mcadams made an outstanding save to deny Scott a second goal on 80 minutes.

albion rovers 2 Queen’s Park 0 Byrne (13, 18)

Rovers made an early breakthrough when Declan Byrne was sent through on Willie Muir and he made no mistake.

Albion doubled their advantage after 18 minutes when Byrne scored his second with a right-foot shot from six yards after Scott Roberts had set him up.

Albion were worth their lead and Euan East was denied a third when Muir was down swiftly to save at his post.

Galt had a chance for Queen’s Park early in the second half, but Goodfellow saved well.

Goodfellow again produced a saves from Salim Kouider-aissa and Cammy Foy in the closing minutes.

stirling albion 2 Brechin 4 Stirling – Heaver (7), Mackin (36); Brechin – Inglis (31), Mcmanus (pen 40, 56), Mcminn (74)

Stirling made a great start and Sean Heaver capitalised on slack defending to prod in the opener.

City hit back when Kieran Inglis beat Currie with a low, angled drive, but the Binos were back in front when Dylan Bikey set up Dylan Mackin to fire home.

Paul Mcmanus smashed in a penalty to make it 2-2 at the break after Inglis had been tripped in the box, and the veteran striker headed City 3-2 up on 56 minutes.

Brechin keeper Lewis Mcminn then sealed a precious win with an incredible goal with 16 minutes left.

He lauched the ball downfield from just outside his own box. It was left by a defender and bounced over the advancing Blair Currie to make it 4-2.

stenhousemuir 1 annan 2 Stenny – Hopkirk (24); Annan – Douglas (30), Wilkie (90)

The Warriors took a deserved lead in the 24th minute when David Hopkirk headed an Alan Cook corner into the net.

Annan equalised soon after when Matty Douglas headed home, also from a corner.

Just as it looked as if the spoils were to be shared, Kyle Wilkie struck to lift the ball over Graeme Smith. He was set up by visiting captain Steven Swinglehurst, who was playing in his 200th league match for the Galabankies.

On seven minutes, Harvey Swann went on a mazy run into the Elgin box and his low cross eluded the visiting central defence, but Graham Taylor could not convert.

A block by Elgin captain Brian Cameron kept out Craig Barr’s 22-yard free-kick.

On 55 minutes, Cowdenbeath’s Connor Smith got free of Stephen Bronsky and his low 10-yarder was blocked by keeper Tom Mchale.
