Get a Will before 2020 with the best in the business

- WORDS LAURA COVENTRY

with just over three weeks to go, time’s running out to make sure 2019’s the year you get your financial affairs in order.

With ILAWS Scotland, you can get your essential legal documents – such as a Will and Power of Attorney – drawn up by the professionals for just a fraction of the cost offered by competitors. So make sure you lift this weight off your mind before the year is out.

Tony Marchi, principal at ILAWS, points out:“we still have appointments available for clients wishing to organise a Will and/or a Power of Attorney before the year is out. However, the appointment opportunities are dwindling rapidly.

“That’s because we are running our discounted rates for only a few more weeks as prices will be increasing at some point in early 2020.”

Did you know that ILAWS can prepare a Will for you in your own home for just £40? (This is much lower than other firms’ charges).

A Will is something that most adults should already have because it ensures their loved ones are provided for when the inevitable eventually happens. Many people wrongly assume a husband or wife automatically inherits 100% of their loved one’s estate when they pass away. In fact, without a Will in place, this is unlikely.

Unmarried partners should also be concerned, as they do not inherit anything from each other, regardless of how long they have been together, unless a Will specifically states so.

Estate planning is a way of securing this, and is just one type of legal service

ILAWS specialises in – another is Power of Attorney.

Although Power of Attorney can take around 14 weeks to be concluded, you can begin to put the wheels in motion before the end of the year, and assign a trusted family member to act on your behalf, so that you and your family have peace of mind as you enter 2020 without this hanging over you. There really is no time like the present to organise a Power of Attorney because ILAWS can sort this for a discounted cost of £220 (plus £79 Scottish Court Registration fee), a price less than half of that offered by its competitors and one that is set to increase in early 2020.

Not having a POA can have disastrous consequences: you could lose access to your bank account, meaning you’d be unable to pay bills or spend your money (this includes any joint accounts); you may not receive the medicine or treatment in hospital your wishes regarding any financial or medical decisions will not be carried out.

It is not too late to organise a POA, but one day it might be.

As well as Wills and Power of Attorneys, ILAWS can also arrange a property protection trust for you so that the value of your home is not swallowed up by rising care home fees. Did you know that a care home costs around £1,000 per person per week, so a year in a care home could amount to more than £50,000? Of course, some of this total is subsidised, but a large proportion is taken from your home – unless you protect it and place it in a trust.

Tony added: “Although you are not able to deliberately deprive the local authority, they are legitimate ways you are able to protect property – including transfers and trusts.

“Most people will have options open to them but until we are aware of their circumstances, no promises can be made. Unfortunately, some people will leave it too late because as we age, the need for care increases – but who is paying for this care? You are – unless your assets are protected.
