Goodwin eyes shock victory

- By Iain Collin SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Jim Goodwin has urged St Mirren to believe they can pull off a Boxing Day shock against Celtic after they stretched their unbeaten run to three games.

Goodwin was happy with his side’s battling qualities in their goalless draw against St Johnstone at Mcdiarmid Park.

And the Buddies boss is optimistic they can cause an upset if they continue to pull together in the face of adversity in the Premiership relegation battle.

He said: “It’s the first time all season we’ve actually put a run of re s u l t s together. OK, it’s only a win and a couple of draws, but it was important we picked up the number of points we did because of the teams we’ve been playing.

“Beating Ross County was a big one, beating Hamilton was a big one, managing to get ourselves back into the game at 3-1 down last weekend (against Livingston) and then here today.

“It could have swung either way but a point and a clean sheet on the road is something to be positive about.

“We’re really in a good place at the moment and I think you can see with the attitude and the commitment of the players, every single one of them is on board.”

However, he is fully aware everything has to go right for his team on Thursday.

Goodwin added: “Celtic and Rangers are on a completely different level to the rest of us. You need to have a great day and you need them to take their eye off the ball a little bit – and that’s to get a point. That’s the way it is.

“But we enter every game to be positive. There’s no point being negative and expecting to lose the game. Anything can happen.”
