Derby win can set Dee on path to promotion

- By Sean Hamilton SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Jordan Mcghee insists Dundee remain focused on winning promotion this season.

And the Dark Blues star reckons derby glory against United can propel them there.

Dundee head for Tannadice on Friday night for the third City of Discovery clash of the season.

Rampant United have left the Dee licking their wounds after both previous encounters.

But Mcghee is confident that this time the Dens men can kick the Tangerines to the kerb.

“We need to give an account of ourselves,” he said.

“It’s a big game so we’ve got to put a marker down.

“Everybody knows what this fixture means to everybody at the club and so far this season we haven’t managed to do justice to that.

“We need to put a stamp on this game and hopefully go on from there and get a win.

“Derbies are all about earning the right to play, first and foremost.

“That’s what you have to do at the start – you have to roll your sleeves up–and after that quality hopefully comes into play.

“In the last one we were on a good run then got beat and it kind of took the wind out of our sails.

“But on the other side of that, a good result can kick- start your season again and that’s what we need to do.”

It’s certainly what the Dark Blues require if they want to achieve their main objective for this season, which Mcghee insists has not changed since it was set in pre-season.

“We’re still looking at it and thinking promotion,” he said.

“That should always be the main aim for a club like this when it’s in the Championship.

“We need to get back to the Premiership as quickly as possible.

“Over the years, big clubs have come down and stayed down for a few years and that’s something we want to avoid.”

The good news for Dundee fans is that, despite a few wobbles along the way, the Dee squad still have enough belief in themselves to get the job done.

“We know how good we are. We all see it in training,” said Mcghee.

“But it’s all very well seeing it in training, we know we need to do it on the pitch

“We’ ve done it at points this season, but other times we’ve let ourselves down and we know that.

“We’re all looking forward to the second half of the season, which will be a big one for us.

“And there’s no better stage to put a marker down than a derby.”
