Morton manager David Hopkin was delighted with the victory and believes it could change the season for his team.

“We had five good chances in the first half but failed to score,” he said. “But when we did, we scored two great goals from Cadden and Baird.

“We needed that result and it could change our season. With the three points we can see us climb the table and we need to play as well as we can”.

The home side started well and in the opening minutes Liam Buchanan tested the Morton keeper with a shot from close range that was cleared for a corner.

The visitors responded with a chance from John Sutton going just wide.

Then Nicky Cadden came close for the opener when he ran at the home defence, beat two defenders and fired the ball across the goal only to see Sutton then Nesbit miss from close range.

Alloa stepped up the pressure on the visitors and the home fans thought they had taken the lead when striker Liam Buchanan had the ball in the net only to be ruled offside by the linesman.

Buchanan continued to pressure the visitors’ defence and a cross from the right fell to Thomson but his shot went wide.

But two goals in two minutes destroyed the home side’s chances of taking anything from the match.

Nicky Cadden, who had been a danger to the home side, connected with a pass from Reece Lyon and he made no mistake in firing past Jamie Macdonald in the home goal.

Then Jack Baird connected with a cross and fired home a fierce shot low at the back post.

The home side had nothing to offer in the closing minutes of the match and Morton deserved the points.

Alloa manager Peter Grant was disappointed with the outcome, saying: “We had a good spell in the match where we were in control but we lost our concentration for 10 minutes and that cost us the match.

“Goals change games and we need to be more decisive in the area of taking chances but we will continue to fight for every point.”
