Striker won’t cross the pond, says Mcinnes

Aberdeen manager Derek Mcinnes has revealed the New York Red Bulls want to sign Sam Cosgrove but he doesn’t believe his highly rated striker will move to Major League Soccer.

Cosgrove won and scored the late penalty that prevented the need for an embarrassing replay against League One Dumbarton.

That was his 21st goal of a highly productive season for someone who has already attracted interest from a number of clubs in the English Championship.

It’s the sort of form that has not gone unnoticed on the other side of the pond but Mcinnes doesn’t believe the player will move to the United States of America at this stage of his career.

Of course, he’s hoping Cosgrove doesn’t go anywhere during the current transfer window but as far as interest from the Big Apple is concerned he was quite definite.

He said: “I’m led to believe they have been watching him and I’m led to believe he is a player of interest.

“But there have been no offers or conversations with our chairman about that so far.

“Whether we anticipate offers or whatever that might well come in I don’t think the MLS is the next destination for Sam but we don’t know until we get an offer.”

Aberdeen have had two offers for Matty Kennedy rejected by St Johnstone but Mcinnes hasn’t given up hope of it being third time lucky.

Money plus a player was the latest bid rejected but the Dons boss will add to his squad this month even if he has to wait until the summer for Kennedy.

He said: “We had an attempt on Friday to get him here but he is St Johnstone’s player and it’s up to them as they are in control.

“We can only do what we can and I am pleased that we made an attempt to get him as we still lack a bit of speed in the team.

“We need the creativity he can bring to the team and if we can’t get him now we will look at bringing in others this month.”

Mcinnes has confirmed that Ross County’s teenage midfielder Mark Gallagher will join the Dons next week in a five-figure deal.
