Stewart wants to make his mark in Europe

- By Brian Fowlie sport@sundaypost.com

Greg Stewart achieved one ambition last week, and now he has another aim.

The Rangers striker grew up watching some memorable nights of European glory at Ibrox.

He’s delighted to have now played his part in a famous victory for the club.

But coming off the bench to help Steven Gerrard’s men fight back from two down to defeat Braga 3- 2 isn’t the extent of his ambition.

Stewart has taken part in 22 games this term, but has only started four times.

He faces a real battle to become a regular member of the starting 11.

“Braga has to be the biggest game I have ever been involved in,” he said.

“We showed a bit of everything to give us a chance going into the second leg this week.

“I am never one for sleeping after midweek games, and the way my emotions were, it was difficult to sleep.

“I remember the nights in the Champions League and when we made the last 16.

“Those were special nights as a fan – but we want to make our own European nights now.

“Thursday was the most- recent special night for the club.”

Alfredo Morelos is suspended for the tie in Portugal and Stewart would relish the chance to replace him.

However, on- loan Hibs man Florian Kamberi is more likely to play and that emphasises how hard it is for 29- yearold Stewart to push his claim for start.

He went on: “If the gaffer needs me, I am ready.

“I’d be lying if I was to say it wasn’t frustrating not to get more playing time.

“Every player wants to play, and I’m no different. But the manager can only pick the 11 players he thinks can win the next game.

“When I come on, it’s normally to try to get a goal.

“If we’re winning and it’s tight, then normally it would be a midfielder or defender introduced to see the game out.”

Stewart certainly hasn’t ruled out becoming a Rangers regular yet and the same goes for the club’s chances of winning the title.

He insisted: “Nothing is written off yet.”
