Rice rues side’s failure to make chances count

- By Brian Fowlie SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Hamilton Accies boss Brian Rice was left lamenting that David Templeton didn’t have his eye in against Motherwell.

His team failed to take advantage of their extra man for most of the Lanarkshire derby.

Rice, who was back in the dugout after serving a five-match suspension for breaching gambling rules, was disappointed that Accies were unable to hit the net.

He said: “It’s two points dropped. We were the better team overall, even at 11 v 11.

“At 11 v 10 we had loads of possession and got into good areas. Unfortunately, when it came to the final thing we do with the ball, the quality wasn’t there.

“That was especially from wide areas, where our crossing was pretty poor.

“David Templeton had five or six shots at goal and normally David would score at least one of them.

“I am frustrated with that. We tried to work the goalie a lot more.”

Injuries meant Rice was denied the services of experienced front men Steve Davies and George Oakley. Their guile might have helped some younger colleagues.

Rice, however, pointed out that his injury list extended well beyond those two.

He said: “We are missing more than a couple of experienced strikers. We are decimated.

“See my team, my bench – that’s all I’ve got available.

“Scott Mcmann called off ill on the morning of the game and we have four attacking players out.

“We did everything we could what we have available.

“I think they gave it everything and responded brilliantly.

“In my opinion we were the better team and should’ve won the game.”

Hamilton are now two points above bottom side Hearts but have played a game more.

Rice admitted he was happy to no longer be watching games from the stand.

He said: “Of course I was pleased to be back in the dugout, I feel I need to be down there with the boys.

“I am in it with them. We together.” are all
