Canny Cove create an eight-point gap at top

-

Masson (4), Davidson (og 41)

Fresh from their victory over Edinburgh City last week, league leaders Cove Rangers welcomed a Queen’s Park side that are embroiled in a battle for a play-off spot.

Cove got off to a flying start and, within two minutes, Willie Muir was turning a Rory Mcallister shot away for a corner.

It was the first of a series of set-pieces that ultimately resulted in a fourthminute opener.

Former Don Jamie Masson’s inswinging delivery deceived the Queen’s keeper and found its way directly into the back of the net.

There was a let-off at the other end when Salim Kouider-aissa failed to force the ball into the goal from close range.

Masson forced Muir into action again with a long-range effort.

The second goal was instigated by Masson once more, his wicked delivery across the face of goal being turned past his own keeper by Jake Davidson.

Kouider-aissa remained the Spiders’ main threat and he was only denied by a fine save by Stuart Mckenzie, keeping the ball out of the top corner.

Paul Hartley’s men managed the second half in a professional manner, keeping a clean sheet to secure the win and create an eight-point gap at the top.

Annan – Joseph (18), Flanagan (24); Albion – See (48)

Annan had early chances with Steven Swinglehurst heading past in the fourth minute and Niyah Joseph’s shot soon after going wide.

But Joseph was on target in the 18th minute when he fastened on to a through ball and shot home.

In the 23rd minute, Tommy Muir’s shot from six yards went past, but, a minute later, Nathan Flanagan scored Annan’s second from an angle.

After the turn, Ouzy See fired home from 12 yards.

Two minutes later, Daniel Scally’s shot went narrowly past the Annan upright.

Albion’s Willie Graham and Declan Byrne were just off target in the last 15 minutes.

Edinburgh City relinquished further ground to rivals Cove Rangers in the title race,

The home side began promisingly enough, on-loan Celtic winger Grant

Savoury breaking through on goal with less than two minutes played, only to see his low shot saved by the outstretched feet of Brechin goalkeeper Lewis Mcminn.

The swirling north Edinburgh wind put paid to any hopes of an entertaining encounter.

Consequently, it was not until the 42nd minute until another chance was created, Savoury again testing goalkeeper Mcminn with a powerful angular drive.

A similar mood was maintained for the entire second half as this uneventful encounter lurched towards its inevitable goalless conclusion.
