Dons legend backs Considine for Israel tie

Johnny Russell admits firing Scotland to Euro 2020 would be the pinnacle of his career.

The former Dundee United and Derby County forward is currently starring in Major League Soccer with Sporting Kansas City.

But despite undertaking several mammoth journeys from the other side of the Atlantic to take up the call to represent his country, his commitment has never wavered.

The 29- year- old is desperate to add to his 14 caps when Scotland host Israel in the crunch Euro 2020 Play- off semi- final on March 26.

The winners of that Hamp den showdown will then face either Serbia or Norway away from home five days later for a place at the summer showpiece.

Russell insists helping end Scotland’s 22- year exile from major finals would be impossible to beat – and is adamant Steve Clarke’s squad have the quality to do it.

“It would be the highlight of my career if I’m selected in those games and can help Scotland get back to a major tournament,” said Russell.

“I don’t think anything could top that for me.

“We’ve got a quality side, with a lot of talented young players and a lot of guys who are in good form at the moment.

“If we can get everyone going and performing the way they have been with their clubs, then I’m extremely confident we can qualify.

“This is the best chance we’ve had in a number of years, so it’s down to us.

“We’ve got a tough game against Israel and then, if we come through that, it’s another hard one away from home.

“However, we are two games away from the Euros and that’s the way we need to look at it.

“We need to give everything we’ve got for those two fixtures.”
