Tommy Wright hailed his very own Braveheart after Callum Hendry’s late winner boosted St Johnstone’s hopes of a topsix finish.

Saints, with a game in hand on their rivals, are now seventh, just a point shy of Hibs, in the coveted spot just ahead of them in a congested middle of the Premiership table. Should they squeeze their way into the top half then they will have plenty for which to thank Hendry.

The 22-year-old, son of

Scotland legend Colin, has become something of a talisman for the Perth outfit.

His 84th-minute strike was his ninth of the campaign and his fourth in his last six matches, with 13 points directly attributable to a string of crucial goals. It is a long way from last season, when the youngster struggled to make an impact on loan at Brechin City in League One.

“I can’t butter it up any other way, it was a poor game,” said Wright. “But, ultimately, it’s about getting results at this stage of the season. If it had been 0-0, I probably wouldn’t have had any complaints but, again, it was about character and they’ve come through.

“People wrote us off far too early. Whether we get into the top six or not I’m extremely proud of how the players have pulled their season around.

He added: “Callum is there to score goals. We kept him on a bit longer and he came up with a goal again. If he keeps working hard he’s got a big future ahead of him.

“He’s always got a smile on his face but he’s a competitor – and you know where he gets that from!

“His dad must be extremely proud of him.

“But he’s got a lot of hard work ahead of him because this game doesn’t stop for anybody. You have to keep working and keep driving
