Hamilton upset the form book yet again to claim all three points at the Fountain of Youth Stadium.

They had been bottom of the table before beating Steven Gerrard’s Rangers at Ibrox on Wednesday and this second successive win lifted them out of the drop zone, leaving them four points clear of Hearts and two ahead of St Mirren.

It may have taken a last-gasp penalty to win it, but they got over the line in spite of playing for the final 12 minutes with 10 men following the dismissal of Mickel Miller.

Killie should have broken the deadlock in the third minute when Eamonn Brophy’s chipped pass found Chris Burke in space but the winger’s low drive was too close to Luke Southwood, who saved with his legs.

Four minutes later there was a near thing at the other end when Stuart Findlay made a hash of clearing a cross and the ball fell to Marios Ogkmpoe but Laurentiu Branescu got down well to parry the striker’s volley.

Brophy passed up a great opportunity in the 19th minute, firing weakly into Southwood’s arms from six yards after he had been picked out by Stephen Hendrie’s cross.

Hamilton suffered a setback when their 17-year-old centreback Jamie Hamilton limped off to be replaced by Mickel Miller, with Alex Gogic dropping into the back four.

They then lost playmaker Blair Alston five minutes from the interval when he suffered a groin strain, Will Collar came on for him.

The quality of entertainment on offer declined after the promising opening, with the swirling wind playing a part. Even so, Ogkmpoe was denied twice, first when Findlay threw his body in front of his netbound drive, then Branescu dived low to his
