Accies with injury-time penalty

-

left to clutch his attempt from the rebound.

Southwood kept Accies in it with a stunning reflex save to beat away Kirk Broadfoot’s header from an inswinging Burke corner as the visitors piled on the pressure.

Then Miller, who had been booked earlier for an innocuous foul on O’donnell, was shown a second yellow card for bringing down Burke with 12 minutes to go.

At that stage, few would have put their money on Accies coming out on top. However, they maintained their composure, dug deep and were presented with the winner thanks to a moment of madness by former Rangers and Scotland defender Kirk Broadfoot.

The veteran took a swing at and missed Will Collar’s low cross but struck Ogkmpoe on the follow-through. The burly striker hit the deck but picked himself up to take the resulting penalty and, although Branescu got his right hand to it, the ball ended up in the net.

“We created a lot of chances but, if you’re not clinical, you get punished – and we weren’t so then we were,” said Kilmarnock boss Alex Dyer.

“I’m really annoyed we came away empty-handed. I just can’t take much from the game. We were unprofessional when they went down to 10 men.

“The game was there for us to win it. We didn’t and then they score. I didn’t really see the penalty at the time and, when I watched it on video afterwards, I didn’t get a clear view. However, it should never have come down to that.”

ACCIES:

(4-1-3-2) Southwood 7, Mcgowan 6, Hamilton 5 (Miller 21 4) Want 6, Mcmann 6, Gogic 6, Smith 6, Alston 5 (Collar 40 5) Martin 5, Ogkmpoe 7, Moyo 5 (Templeton 65). Unused - Fulton, Mckenna, Hunt, Winter.

KILLIE:

(4-4-2) Branescu 6, O’donnell 6, Broadfoot 5, Findlay 7, Hendrie 6, (Hamalainen 73, 5) Burke 6, Power 6, Dicker 6, Mckenzie 5 (Kiltie 73 5) Brophy 6 (Connell 87 2) Kabamba 5. Unused - Koprivec, Millen, Del Fabro, Taylor.

Hamilton’s Marios Ogkmpoe deserves the award, if only for having the guts to stand up and take the responsibility for that last-minute penalty.

The award of the penalty. Just what was going through Kirk Broadfoot’s mind when he took that wild swipe at the ball?
