Morton 1 Mcginty (90+3)

Arbroath 1 Wighton (49)

-

Morton grabbed a share of the points with a dramatic equaliser three minutes into stoppage time when Sean Mcginty rose high to head home a Nicky Cadden corner from the right.

Lichties boss Dick Campbell said: “If ever you saw a steal it was from Morton. Seriously I thought we were outstanding and well in command of the time. I don’t know where all the extra time came from. We should have won the game comfortably.

“It was a good goal we scored and our goalkeeper never had a save in the whole game.”

After a mundane opening period the game burst to life after 23 minutes when Arbroath almost took the lead.

Luke Donnelly slid the ball through to Craig Wighton, who raced through on goal, but Morton keeper Danny Rogers stuck a leg out to deflect his effort wide.

Morton, who have won the two previous league clashes with Dick Campbell’s side, had the ball in the net after 28 minutes when Kyle Jacobs found Nicky Cadden 12 yards out and he swept the ball past keeper Derek Gaston, but it was flagged for offside.

Controversy raged on 38 minutes when Morton’s Kalvin Orsi clashed with Gaston as he went for a high ball. The Ton striker landed on the ground with his side claiming for a penalty, but ref Steven Reid waved away protests.

Arbroath got the opener four minutes into the second half when Kyle Jacobs fluffed his clearance after Miko Virtanen fired the ball through. It broke to Wighton and he lashed the ball low past Rogers from 15 yards.

David Hopkin rang the changes for Morton, bringing on Reece Lyon, Bob Mchugh and John Sutton.

Arbroath should have wrapped up the points in 73 minutes but Craigen, 16 yards out, blasted high over the bar.

One minute from time with his first touch of the ball after coming off the bench, Bobby Linn clipped the ball over from the left, evaded Rogers, but it came back off the crossbar.

Ton boss Hopkin said: “We looked leggy and had to make changes. But good teams keep going. Arbroath don’t concede many goals from set plays.

“We had to grind it out against a good side.”
