UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has admitted time is running out to save the current football season.

The man who heads all European leagues believes there will be no way of restarting the current campaign if games are not being played by the end of June.

Supporters around the world are split on the idea of the current season being declared null and void.

Celtic fans want to see their favourites clinching nine in a row, while Liverpool are close to becoming champions of England for the first time in 30 years.

Ceferin said: “Not knowing when the pandemic will end, we can’t have a definitive plan. We could start again in mid-may, in June or even late June.

“Any time after that, and the season will probably be lost.”

The Slovenian said talks are ongoing, with UEFA working alongside FIFA to find a solution, and hinted that if the season restarts, teams could be asked to play games in quick succession to get the campaign completed.

■ Ryan Porteous is avoiding kicking toilet rolls – because he’s terrified of picking up another injury.

The Hibs defender had just restarted light training when the cornonavirus crisis brought football to a shuddering halt.

Porteous, who turned 21 last Wednesday, underwent knee surgery after being injured during a Scottish Cup tie against Dundee United in January.

His recovery is well underway and he’s doing nothing to halt the progress during lockdown.

He said: “I’m watching the challenges rather than doing them, because can you imagine if I got injured or did my knee again trying to do keepie-uppie with a toilet roll?

“The gaffer would not be happy. “So I’m basically just watching TV, playing Playstation, and trying to keep myself entertained.

“It was not the way I wanted to celebrate my 21st birthday – trapped in the house with my mum and dad,.

“It is probably as dull as a 21st gets and I will have to make up for it when it all gets back to normal.

“I never really bothered getting much planned because we all had an inkling that we might not be wanting big gatherings.

“I would have gone for a meal. Anything but staying in the house watching TV!”
